Part Four

A view of the trail on the upper DHALO near the railroad cars.

Upper DHALO (Below Volant)

The upper DHALO area between the lazy hole and the bridge in Volant is largely composed of riffles, runs, and pocket water with no true pools and very little deep water. However, this area does hold plenty of trout, but it is hard to catch more than a couple from any given spot before moving on to the next. If you like variety and enjoy covering a lot of water, this area is for you. It can also be a good area to find rising fish. The stretch of water immediately below the bridge in Volant is probably one of the busiest areas on the creek in regard to the number of fisherman who fish it. However, since the trail does not run near the creek in this area, it is easy to get some space to yourself by walking downstream towards the lazy hole. Few of the anglers who fish near Volant are willing to venture far downstream, although when fishing is good, a few fisherman can usually be found in the lower part of this stretch.

Rail Car Parking Area

This parking lot provides plenty of parking space and direct access to the trail that parallels the DHALO area. The trail begins at the end of the parking lot and provides easy access to most of the special regulations area. This is a good place to park if you plan on fishing the lazy hole, pipeline, or other nearby spots.

Plenty of parking here!

Mill Dam, Fly Shop, & Old Mill Parking Lot

This is perhaps the single most popular fishing spot on the entire creek. Early season weekends usually find this area packed with anglers. Not only does this area have nearby parking and convenient access to the  fly shop, but it is also the most heavily stocked section of the stream. Trout from the PAFBC, Trout Unlimited, and The Neshannock Creek Fly Shop are stocked at various times during the year, and when the fish are not stocked by float-stocking, most of the fish end up here or elsewhere in the upper DHALO. This is both good and bad. The good is that this stretch will have plenty of  fish no matter what. Even after a particularly bad summer, holdover fish will still be found here. The bad news is that you will usually have plenty of company when you fish here. However, if you can fish during the week and avoid evenings and weekends, there will usually be enough room to fish comfortably.  There is nice mix of water types between the dam and bridge in Volant, however most people gravitate towards the big deep pool behind the fly shop. Fisherman should not be too disappointed if this pool is occupied as there is plenty of good water elsewhere. Often, you will be able to fish the rest of this stretch at your leisure while several fisherman crowd into the pool behind the shop. This area gets fished hard and it is sometimes prudent to move to other areas if fishing is slow. Although other areas may have a lower density of fish, the fish are sometimes more willing to bite. This is especially true during the afternoon. A dozen or more anglers may have fished over these fish by noon, but fish in other areas may have not yet seen a fly. However, this area is still a  good choice for a quick fishing trip and usually gives up at least a few fish.

The public parking area between the old mill and the bridge is the best place to park when fishing this area. There is plenty of room here. The fly shop also has a small lot but you shouldn't use this lot if you intend to stay and fish. It is a small lot and 3-4 cars will fill it up leaving little room for customers.
