Early morning, mid-way between the
pipeline and big rock. |
|
|
The
Pipeline |
| This
area gets its name from the gas pipeline that crosses
the creek here. The wide grass right of way is an obvious
landmark and can be used to access the creek from the trail,
as the trail does not follow the creek as closely as it does
in other area. Another way to get to this area is to use the
small path (see below description) that forms a loop with
the main trial from the big rock to the pipeline. This is a
good area for those who like to fish dry flies. The pocket
water upstream usually holds fish, while the wide, calm area
where the gas line crosses under the creek can be a good
spot to find rising fish when conditions are right. Nymph
fisherman who enjoy fishing riffles and pockets can also do
well in this area. There are plenty of good hiding spots for
trout between the pipeline and big rock even though there is
not a great distance between the two. |

The
Big Rock |
|
The big rock is a prominent land mark that stands at the
beginning of the riffles that lead to the pipeline. Just
above the rock, water rushes over a small ledge to form the
beginning of the riffles. Fish can be found scattered
throughout this area and fisherman who prefer fast water
will find this area to be a worthwhile fishing spot. The
quickest route to this spot is to walk down from Volant. A
small path branching off from the main trial (see above
description) will take you directly to the rock. This path
is marked by a section of broken pipe that lays along the trail. This
area tends to get crowded on busy days as it is the furthest
most anglers want to walk from Volant. |

Looking upstream towards the Lazy Hole. |
|
|
The
Lazy Hole |
| The
lazy hole, as it is called, gets its name from the
combination of being a long, deep, slow pool and from being
a place were lazy anglers spend their entire day! This is
the first true pool if you are walking in from Volant, thus
it attracts anglers who would rather not fish the faster,
and shallower water between the two areas. At the head of
the lazy hole, a nice, deep riffle goes around a small bend
and empties into the pool. This is probably the most
productive and easiest to fish spot since the water has the
right mix of depth, and speed. The rest of the hole is very
deep and fairly slow. During good flows, a large portion of
the pool can be effectively fished with deep nymph and
streamer tactics. Fishing during low flows is usually better
closer to the head of the pool. At the tail of the lazy hole
is a long, shallow, slow moving flat. This area sometimes
holds scattered fish, especially during a hatch. However, it
is probably a good idea to focus most of your efforts on the
upper portion of the hole since this is where the majority
of the fish are. The lazy hole is often crowded when other
areas have no anglers. At times, several fisherman will be
fishing from both banks since the hole is so wide. This is
one of the few areas on the creek where such fishing can be
done comfortably. The hole is deepest on the side of the
creek nearest to the trial and the bank is very steep here.
Thus, many anglers take a small side trial down to the creek
and cross it above the lazy hole, they then walk down the
opposite bank and fish form this side. The wading and
walking is much easier along the opposite bank, however,
longer casts are needed to fish from this side. The lazy
hole often holds plenty of trout, but do not be afraid to
leave this area as other spots can be just as productive. |
